Machinery Safety

You have to make sure any equipment you provide to employees - or which they provide themselves - is suitable and safe to use under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998) (PUWER) and where appropriate Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (1998) LOLER.

These regulations cover all equipment used by employees at work - from hammers, knives, ladders and drilling machines, to circular saws, photocopiers, IT equipment, lifting equipment and motor vehicles.

This includes being able to identify the types of confined spaces and their hazards and the ability to enter a confined space and apply the safe and correct procedures for entry into, working within, and the emergency procedure for confined space operations.

Working at Height

Duty holders have a requirement to -

  • Identify jobs that involve work at height and plan the work to ensure that appropriate precautions are in place
  • Have a risk assessment in place that applies theWork at Height Regulations hierarchy*
  • Have procedures for the selection of correct equipment and ensure that the selected equipment is actually used
  • Communicate risk control measures to the workforce
  • Ensure workers are competent to use the equipment that has been correctly installed/assembled
  • Arrange inspection and maintenance of equipment as appropriate

We can train personnel to ensure compliance with The Working at Height Regulations, prevent injury and drastically minimise the likelihood of accidents in this high risk activity.

DSE Assessment

The Regulations require employers to:

  • Analyse workstations, and assess and reduce risks.
  • Employers need to look at:
    • the whole workstation including equipment, furniture, and the work environment;
    • the job being done;
    • any special needs of individual staff; and
    • Where risks are identified, take steps to reduce them.
  • Ensure workstations meet minimum requirements
  • Plan work so there are breaks or changes of activity
  • Provide health and safety training and information

We can ensure that all these requirements are metand you are complying with all your legal requirements under The DSE regulations.

PPE – Including Face Fit Testing

Personal Protective Equipment is the last line of defence against many hazards. Selection of the most suitable type is part of the legal requirements. Assessment is the most suitable way to ensure compliance.

The Regulations require PPE to be:

  • properly assessed before use to ensure its suitability for the work being done;
  • maintained and stored properly;
  • provided with adequate instruction on how to use it safely; and
  • worn correctly by the user.

We can ensure full compliance by assessing, training and advising.

Abrasive Wheels

The use of Abrasive Wheels has long been recognized as one of the most hazardous operations in construction, engineering and service industries. Because abrasive wheels can be dangerous, most countries have introduced legislation to control the use of abrasive wheel machines. In the UK, it’s a legal requirement for employers to provide training to workers who will use these machines. We can provide certified training to ensure not only compliance but reduction in the likelihood of an accident which can generate huge costs to an organisation.
